My older brother also showed me his disgust and scorn and I did my best to hide in a corner, hoping that my humiliation would be over soon.

At twelve years of age my mother said to me one morning that I need to stop wetting the bed. She said that I was getting older and that I would soon get my period. If I didn’t stop my mother said, I would be pissing and bleeding. How could I ever forget such a charming speech?

My problems went with me to school even though I bathed every morning. I still smelled of urine sometimes and the kids soon teased me daily and left me in a world of shame. I had no where to go and no one to turn to. One morning I was called out of class by the Vice Principal and once in her office she told me that some other kids had complained that I smelled bad and that it was keeping them from their school work. She said that I need to learn what a bath is and that before I go to class everyday I was to come in and use baby wipes she had because I offend the noses of my peers.

After that I bathed harder and started using products with floral scents and even perfume. I never had a problem again. I don’t know why I still smelled like urine after bathing back then but I figured I had to because the kids were teasing me. Later I found out that a friend I had confided in had told everyone. I didn’t smell, but that did not make me feel better. Now I truly had no one that understood. Not my family, not my friends, and not the school staff.

The core problem with my bed wetting is that the adults around me, made me grow up thinking that I was an awful person. They told everyone including me that I did it on purpose. I once heard my mother on the phone saying I purposely wet the bed because I was afraid of the dark. Apparently I was so afraid that I chose to sit in bed and pee on myself. The truth of matter is I went to bed and woke up in a wet bed. I was never taken to a doctor and was never helped by those around me. Even at a young age I knew that if this didn’t stop when I grew up that it would be up to me to go the doctor and figure out what is wrong with me.

I’m 26 years old now and still to this day when I’m with these people I call family and the word pee comes up, I cringe because I think that everyone is looking at me or thinking about me in connection with that word. There had once been a discussion about that dream many of us have. The one where we dream that we are using the bathroom and then we wake up just in time or too late and find out that we wet ourselves. Naively, I spoke up about having had that dream, only to be laughed at, in which case my older brother said, “Yes, everyday. Ha “. That was the last time I ever mentioned anything to do with my situation. It became crystal care that no one understood or cared even years later.

Recently one of my aunts asked me if I still wet the bed and I told her no, which was a lie. She said to me that it is really good to hear because you know it wasn’t your fault. You just had a problem. That comment made me very angry. It was a great thing to say. However where were those words when I needed them as a child? Where was the love and concern? I am now an adult and know with all certainty that it’s not my fault. I have the internet and have done my own research. I have been to the doctor and have spoken with experts. Now when I don’t need my families input, they decide to give it to me anyway? Well I needed it back then, not now.

I’m a grown woman with a fiancée and one of the very first nights that I slept in the same bed with him, I woke up to see that I had peed on him and of course myself. I was mortified but what brought me to tears was the understanding that he showed me. He realized that I was embarrassed and so he went to take a shower so that I could privately change the sheets before bathing myself. We don’t speak of it much but he handles the situation wonderfully whenever it does happen.

My only hope right now is that anyone, child or adult who is in my situation can at least have the internet to do some research and join groups with people who understand. I didn’t have that and my life was hell for a very long time. I still wake up in a wet bed, but now I can get up and put my sheets and clothes in the washing machine, take a shower and move on. I also secretly buy Depends and other adults diapers. I had hoped to outgrow this but realize that I probably never will. It is an embarrassing situation and it saddens me that I can’t get rid of my bed wetting but I try to live my life as fully as possible.

If you know someone who wets the bed, please try to be understanding. You don’t know the shame and self hate that a person feels because of it. They don’t need the same treatment from you.
